Santa Catalina Monastery, Arequipa. At one time a home for the wayward daughters of the rich, a lavish 5-acre nunnery whose old walls echo with rumors of orgies, secret tunnels, and unwanted infants buried in the walls. Continually occupied for over 425 years (aside from in the aftermath of earthquakes, the last one in 2009), nuns still walk and pray and hang their laundry on the roof, hemmed off from the tourists who swarm its flagstone streets.
